But every smooth docking and secure mooring is the result of careful planning, risk assessments, meetings, traininigs, sharp teamwork, and constant communication — especially when you’re handling thousands of tons of cargo and a vessel that doesn’t stop on a dime.

📋 Before the Lines Go Ashore: Preparation

Maneuvering begins long before the terminal comes into view. Preparation sets the stage:

- Review berth particulars: fender spacing, bollard positions, and maximum allowable approach speed

- Check local conditions: current, wind, tide, and any restrictions on draft or maneuvering windows

- Brief the team: Master, Pilot, Bridge Team, and Mooring Party all on the same page — tug assistance, communication channels, and emergency signals confirmed

- Test equipment: windlasses, capstans, mooring lines, and emergency stops — better to fix it now than under pressure

- Line arrangement: Head lines, stern lines, breast lines, and spring lines — each with a specific job to prevent movement forward, backward, or away from the berth

- Tension and spread: Lines should be evenly tensioned and well-spread to share the load. Uneven tension can overload fittings or damage the terminal

- Protect the lines: Chafing gear where lines touch sharp edges or rubbing points. Inspect regularly — worn lines fail when you need them most

- Environmental changes: Tides rise and fall; draft changes as cargo loads or discharges. Line tension needs checking and adjusting throughout the stay
